Salvia officinalis 'Purpurascens'
- Common sage is a tough, subshrubby hardy perennial To about 20", spreading wider. It can grow easily in a wide range of conditions and exposures, and tolerates more shade than most culinary herbs. A range of leaf shapes and colors, as well as flavor nuances, are available. Spikes of light blueish flowers occasionally appear, especially on older growth. Can be long-lived in a lean dry doil, and is best pruned back in Spring, cutting out dead wood and shortening old stems in order to force new growth. An excellent ornamental pot crop.
